Boudoir Photography Ideas – Book a day to remember

Boudoir photography is a essentially a sexy, professional photoshoot for all women — from petite to plus-size and Millennials to Baby Boomers.

Age doesn’t limit you either. We have photographed women whose ages range from 21 to well into their 60s. (See Jane’s retirement photoshoot HERE )

Depending on the look you’re trying to achieve, your boudoir photoshoot can be fun and flirty, intimate and romantic, or very sexy.

Firstly, find an awesome boudoir photographer whose images you love.

Make sure you have a really good look through their portfolio.

Imagine yourself in these pictures.

Would you love to be photographed like this? Have a look at the lighting. Is it beautiful? Have a look at the posing. Do the clients look relaxed? Good posing and natural-looking boudoir pictures only comes with great direction from the photographer. It takes years to learn the art of direction and it really is the difference between good and bad pictures. (Remember, anyone can pick up a camera and take a picture that’s in focus and well exposed, but experience and good direction makes for great, relaxed looking pictures)

Put some extra thought into what you want to wear during your photoshoot. Bring along your favourite lingerie that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Some women choose to wear nothing at all and if you’re brave enough, this can be the most empowering experience of your life.

It’s always a boost for any woman’s confidence, and a chance to celebrate your shape and say “I can look this beautiful if I want to.”

Consider your motivation for wanting a boudoir photoshoot. Maybe you want to pamper yourself and celebrate your sexy side. You might be planning a secret gift for a special someone or maybe, you’re commemorating a milestone event — like a birthday, successful diet or pregnancy.

Whatever your reason for purchasing a boudoir photoshoot, you’ll get so much confidence out of this.

Having your hair and makeup done by a professional is vital to a successful boudoir shoot, just like it is for models on magazine fashion shoots. We provide this service in house for all our clients. Trust us when we say, don’t consider a boudoir style photoshoot without professional hair and make-up.

What are the best things to wear for a boudoir photoshoot?

Stockings are great for almost everyone.

It used to be the case that stockings were worn by almost every woman. They were regarded as classy, feminine and sexy. No outfit was complete without the right pair of hosiery no matter the occasion.

This has changed of course and many women who come to us say they’ve never worn a pair of stockings in their life. If you really hate the thought of wearing stockings then don’t wear them. That said, it’s a perfect excuse to play dress up and try the role of seductive ‘vixen’ and maybe you’ll see that a good pair of stockings will add the ‘Va Va Voom’ effect.

If your are planning on wearing stockings, try not to buy any stockings with elastic at the top, particularly if you don’t have slim legs. The elastic creates a pinch area which doesn’t look great in photographs.

Since a boudoir photoshoot is such a special event, it’s worth going the extra mile and really dressing up.

We recommend stockings that require garter belt support. not only do they look better but pinch far less around the thigh.

We also recommend silk seamed stockings, great for a vintage look, but also great for any boudoir photoshoot. Teamed with a fabulous pair of Louboutains for a ‘knock em dead’ look.

100% silk stockings are truly amazing, and well worth seeking out. They don’t have any stretch in them due to the lack of lycra but look so much better on camera.

See our article on stockings HERE

Any lingerie that fits closely to the body is fabulous! Corsets, bustiers, body stockings,  are always stunning choices.

Keep in mind that loose-fitting lingerie pieces, such as baby dolls and camisoles can hide your curves and add 20 pounds. They certainly help cover ‘mummy tummy’ but are never slimming. They can look great but it all depends on your comfort level.

Make sure your curves have the support they need. Bring a black and nude bra that provides solid support. If you need extra support, wear a bra under your lingerie — the bra will photograph like it’s part of the lingerie

Bring at least four different lingerie outfits to your photoshoot session. it’s better to bring “too many” outfits than not enough. The more outfits you have, the more ways we can match things up with our photography background sets and give you a variety of different looks

MORE TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR BOUDOIR PHOTOSHOOT

Get plenty of sleep and stay well-hydrated the day before (and of) your shoot.

Come to the studio wearing loose-fitting clothes that won’t leave marks in your skin.

Once you book your session we will send you a very detailed prep guide to help you decide what to wear, and Jayne will talk through your wardrobe options before your shoot.

The big secret to a great boudoir shoot and the sexiest thing you can wear for your boudoir shoot isn’t lingerie, your lover’s favorite shirt, or nothing at all. The secret to the sexiest pictures is YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE.

This is why we try and make every photoshoot as much fun as possible. Smile and you look relaxed. Relaxed and comfortable and super sexy.

OTHER IDEAS FOR A FABULOUS BOUDOIR PHOTOSHOOT

Bathrooms and Showers

There is no need to be completely naked for this. Steam on the shower window and soap suds in the bath can cover what you need.

Consider the wet T-shirt look for additional sexiness.

Consider using a Veil or other transparent material

This is a perfect wedding boudoir photo session idea but can be used for any boudoir style photoshoot. Alternatively, a white bedsheet makes a great look every time.

Bring some bling!

Also, remember to bring favourite jewelry to your session to add a personal touch. Your boudoir photoshoot is a great time to wear body jewelry — especially if you’d like nude or semi-nude photos. Body jewelry adds a layer of sexiness to back and booty shots, too.

A man’s white shirt!

A man’s shirt on your body will add elegance and femininity to your pictures. For these pictures, consider wearing only a men’s shirt. Be brave enough to wear little else.

Oh, a final word on outfits – Try and bring some outfits unrelated to underwear. A favourite evening dress, for example. It’s great to wear a dress to start your session. It will get you comfortable in front of the camera and it’s a wonderful way of including some outdoor pictures for variety.

Playful props are fun, too! (Great for creating a narrative)

Hats: Add some mystery to your sexy look!

Bridal Props: Veils, wedding shoes and wedding day accessories add a personal touch.

Sports Gear: Balls, bats, hockey sticks, surfboards, roller skates, snowboards, football shirts can be matched with most bra and knicker sets. Biker leathers are great too.

Musical Instruments: Bring your favorite musical instrument, like a guitar, flute – even a cello!

Fans, masks, anything else that reflects your personality.

Create a Boudoir Photoshoot Pinterest Board

We try and do this for every clients. Pinterest is a great place to get inspired! Before your shoot, create a board with your favorite lingerie looks, accessories and props.

Show us what you love. A Pinterest board filled with your favorite looks will help us to give you the exact look you want.

Please don’t fake tan the night before.

No sprays.

No gels,

No lotions.

If you want a natural sun-kissed glow, book some sessions in a professional salon that has tanning beds, and do it in the nude (no unsightly lines this way).

Trust us when we say, no fake tan. Please.

The basics

If you dye your hair, get your hair done the week of your Boudoir Session. Shave or wax everything, the day of if possible, and spring for a mani-pedi.

You’ll be amazed how these little details can make or break a photo session.

These pictures are going to be around for a while, reminding you of just how awesome you look, don’t skimp the small stuff.

Sleep early the night before and arrive in the mood to have fun!

Remember – You are Perfect, just the way you are.

This kind of babydoll is always a winner. It’s got movement and soft, sensual qualities. It’s transparent enough to be daring and yet offers enough coverage to give you confidence.
