Boudoir Tips - Hands Are Important
BOUDOIR TIPS – WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS?
Without a doubt, posing for a boudoir session can be a little intimidating!
Most of us are not natural-born models.
99% of clients start out the session by telling us they don’t know how to pose! They often say – “What do I do with my hands?”
Hands can look awkward and make you look nervous but with a little gentle direction we can make sure your hands look wonderful and help you radiate a feeling of confidence.
Most people worry about smiling and expression in front of the camera but pay little regard to their hands.
One of the most important things we do is to get you to relax those hands. Shake out all the stiffness. Create shapes like ‘ballet hands’ – Part and bend the fingers. No clenched, closed fists or straight, regimental hands. Just softe and gentle hands. Like a ballet dancer.
Sometimes it helps to do something with your hands to help them create natural positions. Touching your neck, playing with your hair, twiddling a ring, or flaring out a skirt. All these things help to create natural and relaxed looking hands.
Body language experts will tell you that things like touching your lips or your cleavage send strong and positive images to attract a partner during a date and part of the art of a successful boudoir session is to recreate that feeling when you view your pictures.
So, remember these boudoir tips when you want to know what to do with your hands.
One golden rule is – Never show your flat palm towards the camera. It’s large, it’s bright and it’s distracting. Not good for boudoir.
In general, it’s best to have the ‘pinkie’ side of the hand towards the camera. This is the thinnest and most elegant angle.
Give your hands something to do or touch. Something simple like placing hands in their pockets or folding your arms. Place your hands against a wall or table is a good starting point. Hold a glass of wine or flowers.
Use hand poses that flatter the rest of the body. In general, use the hands to create space between the torso and the arms. Try placing the hands on the hips, for example. (Actually, try placing your hands just above your hips. This makes your waist seem smaller than on the wider hips themselves)
Angle your hands from the side. The thinnest and most beautiful part of the hands is side on. Flat palm or back of hands towards the camera will make your hands look larger. Generally this is something we want to avoid.
Use hand poses that create a soft touch and not a push. Wherever your hands rest, don’t exert any real pressure. Think light and gentle at all times. No squishing of the upper arms (Which will broaden them) no pushing on the face for the same reason. Remember, the lightest of touches is what we aim for.
Like a magician uses misdirection to avert your eyes from the trick itself, hands can draw your attention to body parts you want to emphasise and turn your attention away from parts you don’t want to show. Placing your hands on your hips can draw attention away from your tummy and placing hands just above your waist will create the illusion of a thinner waist.
These seem subtle boudoir tips but become hugely important in the art of boudoir photography posing.
So, remember your hands. Soft and gentle, ballet fingers are best.
