Getting to the studio and looking at the glamorous photos on the wall, I thought I’d never look anything like those pictures. However, I began to relax with the friendly makeup artist and Dave being attentive to the different outfits we’d brought, analysing the styles and colours and matching them to locations. It was instilled in me from an early age by my father who was a German teenager when he was sent to England during the war by his parents who were on Hitler’s Black list. (‘Opie’ was the Mayor of Dresden and a representative of the SDP at the time. The opposition party to the Nazis and, so, not very popular with The Fuhrer)

My fathers’ political views that everyone should be born with equal opportunity ran deeply through our family.

I was shown that men and women should be equal, black and white, yellow, brown, all skins should be seen as one ‘colour’ and nobody should be judged or treated differently in society.

I grew up as an ‘agnostic’ in a very Jewish part of London and attended more bah-mitzvahs than I can remember.

To this day I struggle to understand why prejudices exist at all and worry that religion seems to divide more people than it unites which is kind of a paradox.

I’ve never struggled with sexuality, believing utterly, that humans should be allowed to fall in love with whoever they please. However, like many of my generation, I struggle with the vast multitude of personal pronouns that I encounter on a daily basis and hope to God that this is just a passing phase and will go out of fashion before dementia kicks in.

Luckily I have a thoroughly clued up teenage daughter to help explain it all to me.
