Tips To Help You Look Good In Your Photos

Over the years, it seems we humans have become less comfortable with being photographed yet because of social media and camera phones, there are now more photos of us than ever before. How odd! Yet, it is for that very reason, that we see so many pictures of ourselves that we have become super picky about every angle.

Most of the pictures we see are taken in poor light by people who have little idea about photography.

Seeing so many bad pictures of ourselves is what’s making us more nervous of being in front of the camera.

It’s a little counter intuitive.

So in this article, we want to redress the balance and give you a little confidence back.

With these simple tips you will be able to look super comfortable in front of the camera and love the way you look. No one should ever be afraid of the camera.

Remember, in our view, it’s not you, it’s the bad photographer who takes a bad picture….

WANT TO LOOK GOOD IN YOUR BOUDOIR PHOTOS? HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR YOU…

  1. Keep your shoulders dropped at all times. This helps you to look more relaxed and natural. (It Also makes your neck look longer…Bonus)

  2. Breathe through your mouth and keep your lips parted a little. It relaxes the mouth, makes your lips look fuller and your face will look more relaxed as well

  3. Keep your fingers soft and THINK ‘Ballet hands’ when placing them anywhere on your body. No stiff fingers

  4. On a related note, remember to point your toes like a ballerina for every shot where your feet are in the photo. Why? Because this elongates your legs and creates a beautiful, elegant shape. Jayne is a dance trainer by profession and will spend a lot of time tutoring you on this one.

5. Try on your chosen outfits a few days before your shoot. Make sure they fit properly. Poor fitting lingerie in photos is NOT sexy! (Big Tip…. Invest time in getting a bra fitting)

6. Read our pre-session prep guide well in advance so that you feel well prepared for your photo shoot...and relaxed. The last thing you want to feel on the day of your session is unprepared. Here’s The Madison Bou Prep Guide

remember for all photoshoots - think Ballet Hands

7. We often ask you to smile with your eyes or show a ‘hint of a squint’ ….. It’s not easy but relax in the knowledge that we will coach you into this and, boy oh boy, does it make a big difference.

8. When directed, arch your back as much as you can. These bodyshapes look super sexy. (At the end of a 2-3 hour session your body will feel like it’s had a full gym workout.)

9. Another big tip and one we spend lots of time coaching you on…. Keep your chest out and booty back. The best way to do this is by arching your back. You will look superhuman when you do this.

10. Learn to ‘chicken neck’ in front of the mirror. Yep, I know, hilarious! the last thing you want is a neck like a chicken. What we actually mean when we say this is to make a pecking movement like a chicken. Pushing your chin forward ( not loads, just a little…. try it in the mirror and see for yourself) will stretch out the skin around your neck (Ah, tighter skin, now we’re talking) and give you a razor sharp jawline.

Absolutely no double chins ever, ever, ever.

So remember Tip 10 is not ‘chin up’ but ‘chin forward.’

11. Do not force a smile. If you fake a smile for too long on camera it will tense up your face.

Speaking of smiling, IF you aren't smiling while being posed and your photographer says something funny that makes you laugh (hey, it happens sometimes) let yourself laugh. While we don't tend to photograph non-natural smiles in boudoir, if you do start to smile/laugh naturally, we'll click away to capture a candid moment.

12. Keep your schedule very, very light on the day of your photo shoot. Stress only adds to anxiety, which can decrease your sense of confidence in the process.

Bring at least 3 outfits that you LOVE to your photo shoot. You must love what you wear and feel good in it. Again, this will help you feel relaxed.

13. Turn Your Body Slightly to the Side - Instead of facing the camera straight on, which makes your hips look wide, turn your body slightly to the side – it makes a big difference. This gives you more curves and makes you look more flattering in photos. A 45-degree turn is ideal.

14. On a similar note, Bend Your Arms, Legs, and Torso. (Effectively, ‘break’ every joint in your body. No straight, rigid fingers and arms in general)

Straight arms and legs can often look a little formal. Create visual interest with your poses by bending your arms, legs, and fingers, wrists, heels. You can also try leaning against a wall or sitting on the ground.

15. Lift Your Arm(s) away from your sides - Generally, when we pose for a photo, we tend to leave our arms flat at our sides, but this can make you look awkward and uncomfortable and can also make your arms appear bigger than they are. Try posing with your hand on your hip or at least raise your arms a little to alleviate these issues.
