Why is lingerie so popular?

Love may be blind as Shakespeare told us on many occasions but to create that love in the first place surely you need to start somewhere – and wearing lingerie makes the process of falling in love a lot easier for some people. 

Throughout the ages, lingerie has been a big turn on for men and of course women know this. Many women don’t always wear lingerie to attract a partner though, many wear it because it makes them feel sexy and luxurious.

Tiny pieces of fabric with incredibly intimate lacy details and a myriad of colours. It’s luxurious and expensive (often) and a little indulgent in the way that a fine pair of heels or a Louis Vuitton bag is.

The truth is though, whether you wear lingerie for your lover (or to attract one) or yourself, what you wear under your clothes may well be affecting your psyche. Either you think you’re worth it, or you don’t.

For the same reason you clean out the rubbish in your car or make the bed in the morning before you leave to go to work, many women wouldn’t dream of walking out of the house without a matching set of underwear. Perhaps no one will ever see your lingerie and perhaps no one will know your bed is unmade nor see the state of the inside of your car but you will know. A decent set of frillies can do wonders for your self esteem and personal well being. It can help you feel calmer in the face of whatever life throws at you.

French women spend around 20% of their income on lingerie. (A statistic announced by the obviously totally impartial ‘lingerie industry’ but to be fair, this is probably what the British population spend on Big Macs )

Around 18% of all womenswear sales in France are of undergarments.

This is remarkable and yet perhaps it really is good for the soul. If a woman is wearing something beautiful underneath her clothing, she sends a very powerful message to herself. She’s worth it.

Beautiful lingerie is not about seducing a man, it’s about seducing yourself.

Ultimately, it’s selfish… something just for you.  And if it’s a man you’re after, he’ll know, because you’ll walk differently, hold yourself in higher regard and, yes, you’ll feel sexier!

Lingerie is worn to make the wearer feel good about themselves. If a guy gets lucky enough to see it, then he should consider himself blessed.
